Paint peels away
Like dried roses
Stripping down
Bare to the bone
Crumbs leftover
On the grounds
Dirty fingernails
Hold evidence
Claws scratched
Digging deeper
Searching farther
Planning a break
From the prison
On an island
Out in the middle
Of everywhere
Empty pockets
Courageous hearts
Look at canvas
As a blank slate
And take hold
Once again
After so long
The paintbrush
And stroke
